THE MAJOR’S LETTER is a fictional account of the last week in the life of Union Major Sullivan Ballou, featuring the famous letter he wrote to his wife Sarah shortly before his death at the Battle of Bull Run. Made famous by the PBS Documentary “The Civil War,” Ballou’s letter has been called one of the most eloquent statements of love and devotion found in 19th century literature. All readers, please help me out: I'd like to turn this concept into a novel, so would love to have your feedback on how it should evolve. I want to write a book that both of us can enjoy. So check it out, and let me know how I can create a story we'd both be proud of. Thanks! RobertOut of great tragedy sometimes comes great triumph. One such tragedy was the American Civil War, fought from 1861 to 1865. More American soldiers died during this intense five-year period than those in World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam combined. And yet, the triumphant stories of heroism, bravery and devotion from this great tragedy abound. THE MAJOR’S LETTER is a fictional account of the last week in the life of Union Major Sullivan Ballou, featuring the famous letter he wrote to his wife Sarah shortly before his death at the Battle of Bull Run. Tales of then and now, bravery and treachery, good and evil, and romance and disenchantment become emblazoned on the minds and hearts of those who watch and listen. The old king begins, "As we each begin our individual quests in life and try to figure out who we really are in our heart of hearts — who it is that God knows we may become — most of us are given a name by which we will be known throughout our lives. He made us promise that we will make sure that it was published posthumously. We debated for a long time whether to honor his final request. We had to balance loyalty to him with what reading it will do to you. In the end loyalty won out, and for that we are truly sorry. “Naomi loves you, Saul … She loves you in a way that neither you nor I can truly understand – in a way that only someone like her is capable of loving. But because of who she is, a world like ours can only destroy her. And because of what you are, her love will cause you pain unlike anything you have ever felt before..."The dystopian image of a world order built on perpetual war is Bo Jinn's backdrop to the story of Saul Vartanian; a veteran of the warzones, scarred both physically and emotionally by battles fought, and by the perverse order of the UMC to which his life and soul have been committed, and from which there is no escape. Saul’s struggle takes a dramatic turn, however, when he comes upon a figure of innocence and purity utterly alien to the world that bore him. Orphaned by the ever-growing blight of war and the spread of so-called “martial order”, little Naomi becomes Saul Vartanian’s last vestige of hope and his final redemption for a past long forgotten. . .

Tom's Treasure

Tom's Treasure

Henry Givens

Religion / History / Mormonism

What do an 82-year-old war veteran and an 11-year-old Ninja wannabe have in common? They are related but they don’t find out about it until the tenth chapter. Tom’s Treasure is a heart-warming story of how God brings a faithful servant’s life full circle. Have you ever made a decision you knew was right but something went terribly wrong and you wondered why? Tom did. But, God worked it all out. When World War II broke out, Tom Dandridge joined the Army and eventually became a part of the newly formed U.S. Army Rangers. On their first assignment, a premature explosion crippled Tom and gave him amnesia. A band of local natives carted him away to the safety of their village until they could find the outcome of the skirmish. He stayed there for several years until his memory came back. The explosion was so fierce, that the Army thought he was dead. His widow, Ellen, and his young son, Billy, were devastated. After several years, Ellen married the associate pastor of her church to help her raise Billy. When Tom's memory came back, the Army went about the arduous task of mending his crippled legs. It was during his transport to a another Army hospital that he prevailed upon his superiors to allow him to just ride by his old home. He knew that Ellen had remarried and he didn't want her and Billy to know he was still alive just yet. When he got to his home, the three of them were outside. His son and the stepfather were playing catch with the football while Ellen cheered him on. Billy was pretty doggone good. They were happy and Billy wanted to be a tight end just like his dad. With a heavy heart, Tom made the decision not to come back into their lives. He couldn't bear the thought of forcing his sweet Ellen to make a tough decision. Then again, he didn't know if the Army doctors could ever straighten out his legs. Would Billy stick with football or give it up to be with him?Years and operations went by and Tom was eventually as good as new. He busied himself with helping troubled teens find their way to Jesus. One by one, God would bring them into his life. One by one, he would walk with them through their turmoil. He said it was like helping them find buried treasure. Life was fairly satisfying but a part of his life was still empty.Years later, God began to tug on his heart to go back to his old home town to see if he had any relatives there. Was Billy still alive? Did he have any grandchildren? The most haunting question was, if he did find anyone there, what would they think? Would they be mad because he never came back? Could they accept him for who he was? As hesitant as he was, God wouldn't leave him alone. Tom knew that there must be someone there God needed him to talk to.The town had changed a lot in fifty years, and there were no Dandridges to be found. He figured his search was over and he headed back to the hotel. He may as well go back home and live out the last few years of his life.As he took a short walk through the park, he happened to meet an eleven-year-old boy who was showing the middle school football team some Ninja moves. Now that was quite odd. But, more peculiar than that, God would not let him leave until he spoke to the young man. As they struck up a conversation, Tom realized that this kid was rambunctious and energetic. He didn't seem to have any deep-seated problems at all. That's where he was wrong. This young man need a great-grandfather to speak into his life. Yes, he didn't find out for ten more chapters but Tom had just met one of his only great-grandson.A Soldier Finds His Treasure is funny and very heart warming. God is faithful to honor the love and dedication of His faithful servant, Tom. He has sown good seed for fifty years and God brings him an abundant harvest of happiness. Also, we find out that God put Tom through his journey because of the plans that He had for Tom's great-grandson, Arthur. In the end, all things do work together for good to those that love the Lord.I trust that you will laugh, cry and enjoy this testimony to God's goodness.

What if God had a psychiatrist? What would their sessions uncover? Megalomania? An inferiority complex? Voyeurism? This short story is an explanatory expedition into God's infinitely fractured psyche. Our probe comes in the somewhat obese and very unattractive shape of our unfortunate protagonist - a middle-aged Jewish psychiatrist whose uninteresting life forced him to become a therapist for the rich and famous and whose untimely death forced him to become the therapist for the dead and deified. Now his days are filled with treating Buddha's body image, Mohammed's phobia of being rendered as an image, and Jesus' daddy issues. Then it gets weird. Our probe falls into the space between good and evil, and becomes frozen at the midpoint of insanity and sanity. This is a story of a mad God, of reversal of roles, and reverse psychology. The Mare Gods The Sword of Nubium

The Mare Gods The Sword of Nubium

J.M. Thomas

Catholicism / Philosophy / Religion

Life for Audrey Reynolds consisted of nothing but the routine developed to cope with abuse. She never looked to the Moon, to the Mare Gods, for help, never prayed for their influence, and never cursed their apparent lack of interest in her existence. When civil war erupts among the Five of the Mare, Audrey finds Nubium, god of justice, in need of help and, quite possibly, in need of her love. The world looks to the Moon when in full and it is known the Mare Gods look back. A new Moon frightens the true believers who worry whether the gods have abandoned them and whether they will ever return. Storms are attributed to angry gods. Peace and prosperity means the gods are pleased. Humans understand precious little about how great, or how feeble, control over the course of events they have. When the Five of the Mare determine to fight one another for control of their realm, and ours, humanity will be forced to choose sides and hope to survive the war.If she had her way, Audrey Reynolds would stay as far away from the conflict as possible. A believer, but by no means devout, Audrey spent a lifetime wondering why the gods failed her in her time of need. These are her stories and how she comes to grips with Nubium, the god of justice, and his quest to restore peace among the gods.

A short story about the life of a quirky person who diedThis book contains six of the eighteen fairy tales from Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book (1889). The stories have been rewritten sentence by sentence to make them accessible to 21st century American children. The 6 stories include Toads and Diamonds, Beauty and the Beast, Snow-white and Rose-red, Why the Sea is Salty, Felicia and the Pot of Carnations, Hansel and Grettel. The great beauty of Andrew Lang’s Blue Fairy Book, originally published in 1889, is that it brought together many different fairy tale traditions. There are stories written by Charles Perrault and Mme d’Aulnoy, collected by the Grimm brothers and Asbjornsen and Moe, and translated from the Arabian Nights. It is a very rich collection of fairy tales. However, the stories are written in a language that is outdated and in places inaccessible to modern American children (and even their parents). To remedy this problem, I have thoroughly edited half of the stories contained in Lang`s book, keeping the stories as intact as possible, while revising every sentence so the stories can once again be read with pleasure by children.

Fate brings these two long-lost partners together on a quest for transcendence. As two high school sweethearts and lovers are reunited after an eight-year absence, two tragedies are occurring. Pamela, at the age of twenty-six, is dying of cancer. Dwight, also twenty-six years old, is dying in a subtler way. Dwight has allowed financial success and prestige to erase his life’s passion. When fate brings these two long-lost romantic partners together during the last days of Pamela’s tortured life, everything that takes place after that is intended to allow you to meditate about difficulties and decisions that you will almost certainly have to face. Is all of your physical and psychological pain meant to simply be endured? Or is it your right to decide what limits you wish to place upon your own suffering? Finally, is it possible that a supremely patient and loving spiritual presence carefully knits together what might seem to be accidental or trivial events, so that even the darkest and most tragic of all of our lives disasters lead toward an ultimate state of ecstasy and transcendence?? Because these subjects are so crucial in all of our lives, I am offering “The Runway” to you as a free download. If this story assists you in any way, that will make my work worthwhile. My best wishes to you,Michael Naugle.

The North Shore D-Day

The North Shore D-Day

J.M. Thomas

Catholicism / Philosophy / Religion

By outward appearances the North Shore is the greatest place on Earth. Affluent families living on compounds driving the finest vehicles. Friends, families, and parties the way of life. Coffee shops. Yoga pants and Mexican groundskeepers. But just beneath the surface the North Shore is anything but idyllic as best friends Anne, Chaz, and Margot are about to find out on D-Day.Any occasion is cause for celebration on the North Shore. An announced engagement sets off a course of parties where each host attempts to outdo the previous. Election to the Board of Directors of a charity in the city requires the local newspaper to attend to photograph the event. Milestone birthdays keep the CEOs away from their palatial offices and in their corporate jets spiriting away to private clubs the world around. In River Grove there were few celebrations larger than the party commemorating one of its favorite citizen’s participation in the landings at Normandy. For Margot Wallace, June 6th will always mark the day her life irrevocably changed. For Chaz Perkins, June 6th is always a day to shine in the spot light. For Anne Glassmaker, June 6th is all too familiar to the day before and bodes poorly for the day to follow.Follow Margot, Chaz, and Anne and their searches for love and fulfillment in stories of “The North Shore” available monthly.
